Douglas Pithey started painting as a young boy, holding his first, sell-out exhibition at the age of 12.
Moving to London in his early 20s, he painted professionally for several years, concentrating at that time largely on oils of African wildlife, rural landscapes and portraits, in both realism and impressionistic styles. In later years, he concentrated on mixed media and abstract works.
On his return to South Africa, he took up press photography, joining first Die Transvaaler and thenthe internationally renowned Rand Daily Mail, before relocating to Cape Town where he eventually joined The Argus.
During a press careerspanning more than 30 years, Doug became one of South Africa's foremost press photographers, earning numerous awards and commendations, including twice being named South African Press Photographer of the Year. He also took national awards for the News Photographer of the Year, Feature Photographer of the Year and Best Sports Photographer at least twice in each category.
During that time, Doug won the world press award for a series of portraits of Nobel Peace Loureate, Desmond Tutu.
Having spend a lifetime in the creative worlds of art and photography, Doug retired from press work in 2000 and turned his attention to presenting his prolific art and photographic collection through his online gallery, making available originals and prints of his unique works.
This website contains a selection of his abstract, wildlife and impressionistic works originally executed in both oils and pastels and now available as mounted prints on fine art paper in limited editions.
